2:00 THE Canadian Hedge Fund Conference
THE Canadian Hedge Fund Conference is designed to provide Canada’s hedge fund managers with information, insight and inspiration into those things that are most important to them in building and managing a great hedge fund business in Canada. Our 2017 Conference was specifically focused on raising capital and featured three panels of different types of allocators.
After registration, coffee and networking, the afternoon began with a panel of pension fund investment managers discussing Institutional Investors’ Considerations and Intentions about Allocating to Hedge Funds. Delegates heard the views of Ela Karahasanoglu, Vice President, Investments and Multi-Asset Strategies at Investment Management Corporation of Ontario; Christophe L’Ahelec, Senior Principal, Alternative Investments, Capital Markets, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan; and Marlene Puffer, Chair of the Asset-Liability Management Committee at HOOPP over the course of an hour of discussion, expertly moderated by David Rudd, Chairman of Sigma Analysis and Management. These pension fund managers provided the delegates with critical insight into how they use hedge funds now, including the most important aspects of a hedge fund and what they’re hoping to achieve with it. They also discussed their views on alpha, risk management, and their plans for using hedge funds going forward as well as the benefits of external versus internal management.
Networking breaks before, during and after the conference were a vibrant part of the afternoon as delegates enjoyed the opportunity to liaise with peers, panelists, investors, investment advisors, service providers and industry consultants.
The conference also included a panel of Family Office managers, moderated by Margaret McNee, Senior Partner at McMillan LLP, discussing The Evolving Investor: Rebalancing Portfolios to Include Hedge Funds. This insightful discussion included the panelists’ market outlook over the next decade, what strategies they’re looking for in a hedge fund investment, their key considerations in choosing a hedge fund for their clients’ portfolios and how they conduct their due diligence on hedge funds. They also shared insight into the conversations they have with their clients about hedge funds. The panelists were Adam Buzanis, Director of Research at Prime Quadrant; Loren Francis, Stewardship Counsellor & Principal at Highview Financial; Dave Paterson, Director, Research & Analytics at Westcourt Capital; and James Price, in his capacity as Director, Capital Markets and Investment Services at Richardson GMP Private Family Office.
The final panel of the day examined IIROC Dealers’ Opportunities (and Challenges!) of Investing in Hedge Funds and provided the hedge fund managers in the room with a valuable perspective on this important, and growing, distribution channel. Panelists Michael Hayhoe, Senior Investment Advisor & Branch Manager at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management; John MacIsaac, Senior Analyst, Global Manager Research at RBC Wealth Management; Richard Smith, Portfolio Manager & Wealth Planner at CIBC Wood Gundy; and Jeremy Tabarrok, Portfolio Manager at Scotia Wealth Management joined moderator Robert Lemon, Executive Director, Prime Services Group at CIBC Capital Markets for a vibrant and powerful discussion about their experiences using hedge funds, how they go about choosing specific hedge funds to invest in, how they position hedge funds with their clients, and how they view the future of alternative investment products in Canada.
